Stop banking with Barclays
We, the undersigned, applaud Gateshead Council for committing to be carbon neutral by 2030. And yet the council and its associated entities continue to use Barclays Bank extensively – council tax, business rates and Gateshead Housing company all use Barclays accounts. Barclays has invested £70 billion in fossil fuels and carbon intensive companies since the Paris Accord was signed in 2015 - and it shows no signs of stopping.
Time for a change, Gateshead Council. It's time to stop banking with Barclays and consider other banking alternatives that better support a low carbon economy rather than sticking with the “business as usual” banks who are actively working against the council’s objective of being carbon neutral.

Background information »
Carbon emissions must start declining steeply now if we are to stand a chance of avoiding catastrophic climate breakdown.
In the council plan on carbon neutrality it says “We know we can't make these changes alone, so we are also working with partners, residents and businesses to identify the radical action needed in the borough and the resources required to deliver it.”
Radical action needed – move from Barclays today, Gateshead Council!
