No to Volunteer Libraries

We call on the council to cease the practice of entrusting the running of libraries in Gateshead to volunteers. Our concerns are a) a complex and intricate professional service with a proud history and record of achievement should not be entrusted to individuals who, however well-intentioned, lack the skills, the expertise and the holistic vision to take the service forward b) there is a real danger that professional staff will lose their jobs and livelihood, with the added indignity of seeing volunteers take their places.
