Petition
Repair of the Keelman Way

We ask Gateshead council to work with Cemex and Network rail to repair the Keelman’s Way. The closure of the path affects a wide variety of users, including but not limited to; children who walk to school, individuals accessing Wylam station, pedestrian and cycle commuters, recreational users and residents who use the path to connect to essential services in neighbouring villages. The path is within a few metres of the railway line which connects Newcastle to Carlisle. Without immediate action to prevent further erosion it may now pose a risk to users of this rail service. The continued erosion of this path could clearly be anticipated and has been raised with Gateshead Council and Network rail on a number of occasions over the last three years. However, no action to protect this path was taken. We therefore now urge Gateshead council to repair this path as soon as possible, working with both Cemex and Network rail to achieve this aim.

Background information »

The Keelman’s Way is a popular footpath, that forms part of the Sustrans Regional Cycle Route and runs along the south of the Tyne connecting Wylam via Blaydon and Dunston to Gateshead and the Riverside. It has been eroded by the River Tyne in recent years such that as of 3rd Feb 2021 a section has now been closed between Clara Vale and Wylam. The Keelman’s way is a recognised footpath that is maintained by Gateshead council, is on private landed owned by Cemex (a multinational building materials company) and also runs parallel and very close to the railway line (owned by Network rail) that connects Newcastle to Carlisle. Over recent years a section of the path has eroded significantly and has been diverted on a number of occasions. The erosion has continued such that the path has now become unusable and further diversions are not possible due to the proximity to the railway line. The Council, in combination with two of the regions combined authorities recently launched a £337m programme to “to transform the way people travel around the North East” (see; https://www.gateshead.gov.uk/article/11981/North-East-launches-377-million-bid-to-transform-sustainable-travel). However a failure to maintain a key and popular part of infrastructure that supports this aim by connecting pedestrians, cyclists and rail users means that residents will be forced to use private vehicles or taxis to make these journeys, with implications on both the environment and public health.
